Plus, a heads up,if you’re planning to kayak the mangroves, try to book at sunset for that golden light, and be sure to bring insect repellent. Some of these private tours can go off the beaten path, so wear comfy shoes and maybe pack a snack.

And don’t shy away from private food tours in the Santurce neighborhood, where street art meets some of the island’s best hidden kitchens. The guides there know all the vendors who serve up mofongo, alcapurrias, and fresh ceviche that aren’t in guidebooks. Trust me, it’s a whole different flavor profile when you can ask all about the cooking and meet the chefs personally.
