Local Picks - Things To Do in Puerto Rico

Looking for things to do in Puerto Rico that go beyond the usual tourist spots? This page is curated by our Puerto Rico Local Experts, the people who live here and experience the island every day. We don’t rely on algorithms or advertisers, just real knowledge passed around between locals.

Our picks take you to places with character, from spending an early morning coffee in Santurce to a quiet hike through El Yunque when the crowds thin out on weekday afternoons. You’ll find authentic experiences recommended by people who know what’s really worth your time. For example, try a late afternoon walk along the shores of Piñones right before sunset, where the ocean breeze cools the air and you can hear native laughter from small food kiosks nearby. These are the things locals do, and what they suggest visitors do too. Our list is updated regularly to keep it fresh and reliable, so you’re always getting current local advice about Puerto Rico.

Local tip from Puerto Rico

If you’re exploring Puerto Rico and want a taste of everyday life, head to the Calle Loíza area in Santurce during the late afternoon. Locals often stop by one of the roadside food spots serving fresh empanadas or pinchos while the sun starts to go down. It’s a way to enjoy authentic flavors without the tourist crowds. Plus, it's a great time to stroll the street and watch the neighborhood wake up into its evening rhythm. Weekdays are easier for this, as weekends tend to get busy, especially during high season.
