Vegan eating off the beaten path

If you want to dig deeper than the usual veg spots, head to small towns like Guaynabo or Bayamon. You’ll find family-run cafés with amazing plant-based versions of traditional dishes. And never underestimate the street vendors, especially during a festival or weekend market day. One of my favorite finds was a tiny stand selling vegan alcapurrias near Piñones, made fresh and crispy. If you’re renting a car, try to stop by a local farmers market too, fresh coconut water and tropical fruit make for perfect snacks or even a light meal on the go.

Also, ask locals for recommendations. Puerto Rico’s growing vegan scene is still pretty word-of-mouth, and some of the best dishes you’ll find aren’t always on the usual apps or guides.

They’re getting easier especially in San Juan and some parts of the island like Rincon. Smaller towns can be hit or miss though, so it’s smart to plan ahead or hit up local markets where you can grab fresh fruit and snacks.
Absolutely! Traditional mofongo uses pork cracklings, but many vegan spots swap those out for mushrooms or crispy plantains that still nail the texture and flavor. It’s worth trying at places like Punto Vegano in Santurce.
Not at all. Bakeries and cafés are starting to feature more vegan goodies, especially in San Juan. Look for coconut-based flan or vegan tres leches made with plant milks. Húmus Tapas Bar sometimes surprises me with great vegan sweets.
Try amarillos maduros fried in coconut oil. Sweet plantains cooked right are simple but addicting. You’ll find them at many street vendors, usually vegan by default.
Yes! The farmers' markets in Santurce and Old San Juan often have vegan street food and fresh produce. Early morning visits usually get you the freshest picks.
