Culebra Puerto Rico

Culebra, a small island seventeen miles from the east coast of Puerto Rico and nine miles north of Vieques, is actually part of a small archipelago of islands covering 7,000 acres. The waters around Culebra are crystal clear, with many cays and coral reefs providing the setting for some stunning diving and snorkeling. Culebra together with the island of Vieques are known as the 'Spanish Virgin Islands'. You won't find any nightclubs or malls in Culebra, it's only seven miles long by four miles wide; you will find a friendly laid back island vibe, with lots and lots of beaches. The most popular beach on the island is Flamenco Beach, covered with soft white sand and surrounded by arid tree covered hills, it is truly what the Caribbean is all about... unparalleled beauty!

Dewey is the island of Culebra’s only town a sleepy, rustic, two stop sign place, that is the gateway to the islands charm and beauty. You can buy groceries, get a decent meal and basically hang out with the locals, many US expats among them. The best way to get around Culebra is to rent a golf cart or Jeep. There a a few rental companies to choose from, Carlos Jeep Rental is very convenient since their rental counter is located right in the small airport (www.carlosjeeprental.com). You can also rent a bicycle from Culebra Bike Shop or walk which is a great way to explore and save on gas!

There are no mega-resorts or even large hotels on Culebra just some very nice boutique hotels and guest houses. Club Seabourne Hotel is a particularly nice "Green" hotel with excellent service and beautifully landscaped grounds. For assistance on finding and booking activities on Culebra you can work with the hotel or contact Culebra Green Adventure.

There are many other fabulous beaches around the island; Tamarindo and Zoni are two good ones. Nature lovers can enjoy the Culebra National Wildlife Refuge's at Luis Peña Cay and Culebrita Cay the only two cays open to the public. It is worth renting a Kayak or hiring a water taxi to visit Culebrita Cay and its six beaches, tide pools, reefs and sea bird nesting areas, basically untouched for 500 years.

The Benjamin Rivera Noriega Airport in Culebra receives flight service from San Juan and  the Jose Aponte de la Torre Airport in Cieba. Currently Vieques Airlink and Air Flamenco are providing scheduled service to Culebra. The flight from Isla Grande Airport in San Juan takes about 30 minutes, flying from Cieba is a short 13 minute hop. Ferry Service from Farjardo is available twice daily.
